I felt like I was in a TV episode of Two Broke Girls. If anyone watches the show the dumpster is converted into an apartment. Maybe that is why "DO NOT OCCUPY" is on the dumpsters.
I drove home after a great morning of eagle watching, had a shower, then all of us went into Homer and explored. Bev also made a reservation for supper, looking forward to that.
The forces of nature built Homer Spit and those very forces could have washed it away if humans had not intervened. Winter storms from the northwest try to separate the 5 mile strip of sand and gravel from the mainland. The theory for the Spit’s origin is it’s the remains of a glacial moraine reshaped by oceans currents.
The village of Homer was originally located at the tip of the Spit from 1896 to 1902. Homer grew into the foothills as more settlers came to the country. When Homer became linked to the rest of the world in the 1950’s by road, the fishing industry shifted to the north side of Kachemak Bay.
As you round the corner descending into Homer the view on a clear day is breath taking.
Our first stop in Homer was the Island & Ocean Visitor Center. The center has interpretive exhibits that provide an introduction to the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. We hiked along Beluga Slough Trail in search of shorebirds. Saw a few but they were at a distance. It was just nice to get out of the truck.
After the wildlife refuge we drove down the spit and walked around going in and out of shops.
We had time to go home and spend a couple hours with the dogs before supper at Captain Pattie’s. The restaurant was on Katchemak Bay with mountains in the background. It was a beautiful view.
