Lake Havasu City, AZ

Longing to be around water again we headed back to the Colorado River, this time were in Lake Havasu City. This young town was founded in 1963 and incorporated in 1978. It sits about 250 feet above sea level and boast an easy 300 days of sunshine per year. It was named one of the top 10 retirement cities in America. We chose the state park because of it's proximity to the river. There are several other campgrounds, resorts, and dry camping areas in the area but we found this was the nicest and cheapest.

Lake Havasu is a destination for boaters and water sport enthusiasts. Each day is filled watching boats go up and down the river or people fishing for large or smallmouth bass. My neighbor would go out in his canoe each day (sometimes several times a day) and brings home a large bass each time.

One of the biggest attractions to Lake Havasu is the London Bridge. No it's not a replica it's the real deal. In 1968 the founder of Lake Havasu, Robert P. McCulloch purchased the bridge for $2.46 million dollars and relocated it in Lake Havasu. Each block was numbered before the bridge was disassembled then shipped via the Panama Canal to California and trucked from Long Beach to Arizona.

The bridge now spans the man-made Bridgewater Channel between Lake Havasu and Thompson Bay.

The development of this area is a paradise for walkers, runners, and dog owners just to name a few. Along each side of the channel is a path of which only one side dogs are allowed. That being said there is a large, no a huge dog park on the other side where they can go in the water and romp around with other dogs off lead. How nice is that in the middle of a city.

Beautiful landscaping along the channel

Lake Havasu is home to more lighthouses than any other city in America. The 1/3 scale replicas are functional and built to the specifications of the original lighthouse. There are more than 21 that line the shores in both Arizona and California. Several are along the channel.

Our days would be filled watching the boats go up and down the river wishing our friends Laurel and Murray where here with their pontoon boat. Maybe next time we will rent one and do the river. Lulu and Stuart didn't mind the river once they were in. The 75 degrees did not allow them to be there very long. I need to introduce them to our friends (Nancy & Betsy) dog Spirit, can't keep her out of the water.
"Let me out, let me out"
Watching nature is a passion of mine so I can't pass up a chance to share a photo-op. As I was grilling our steak I noticed a ? bug eating it's supper. It chose only the little flowers on the plant. The steak needless to say was a little well done but Susan understood, just shook her head and smiled. I have no idea what kind of bug it is.
What a cool bug
As the wonderful days would end we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset each night.
Taken from our site, how great is that

  1. Yep, Spirit would love that dog park and show your pups what to do in that lake.
